Between the Lines: The Writing Experience (,  a creative writing summer program for teenagers, is now accepting nominations for young writers ages 16-19 from Russia and Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa to join young US writers for two weeks of writing and cultural exchange.

IWP participants running a youth creative writing workshop in Iowa 2012

Now in its seventh year, this group of young writers will live and study together on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City, Iowa. Daily activities include world literatures seminars, creative writing workshops with award-winning authors, and nightly cultural exchange activities. Funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and hosted by the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, this program seeks to bring together young people who want to become writers of fiction or poetry in their own language.

Writing workshops are conducted in English, Arabic and Russian, and international writers are chosen for the strength of their writing in their native language of Russian or Arabic, not English. All international applicants must apply through the US Embassy or consulate located in their country.

For further information, and for a list of participating countries, please visit the program’s international FAQ page:

I would have killed to be able to participate in something like this when I was ehem younger so go for it! or help your sister or son to put an application through. They'll be sure to thank you when they make their Pulitzer prize speech.
